Benedict Cumberbatch is joined by Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the superhero movie

Marvel has released an intense new international trailer for Doctor Strange that features several snippets of previously unseen footage.

The forthcoming superhero movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who “discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions” following a serious car accident.

The Sherlock actor is joined by an all-star cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton, who both feature prominently in the new trailer, as well as Rachel McAdams, Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen and Steve Jobs/A Serious Man actor Michael Stuhlbarg.

Swinton is playing the “Ancient One”, a mystical character who serves as a mentor to Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. In the Doctor Strange comic books, the Ancient One has always been Tibetan, which has led to accusations of “whitewashing” since it was announced last year that the white actress had been cast in the role.

Swinton responded to the controversy by saying in April: “Well, it’s not actually an Asian character – that’s what I need to tell you about it. I wasn’t asked to play an Asian character, you can be very well assured of that.”

Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil) directs from a script by John Spaihts (Prometheus). Doctor Strange opens in UK cinemas on October 25 before getting a US release on November 4.
