Florence And The Machine singer Florence Welch has been backed to make an appearance in Doctor Who by the series' lead actor Matt Smith.

The TV star recently admitted that he would love to see the flame-haired frontwoman make a cameo in the sci-fi series one day, reports the Press Association.

Asked who he would like to see make an appearance, Smith said: "Florence from Florence And The Machine – I'd quite like her to do one."

The Doctor is accompanied across time by his assistant Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan, in the actual series.

He also said he would like former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona to make an appearance in the show at some stage.
