Florence Welch on her vocal injury: 'I felt something go pop'

The Florence and the Machine singer's recent vocal strain caused her to cancel two festival shows

Florence And The Machine frontwoman Florence Welch has spoken out about the vocal injury which caused her to pull out of Benicassim festival earlier this month.

Welch and her band had to cancel their headline appearance at the Spanish bash at the last minute after she came down with "acute vocal strain causing swelling of the vocal cords". She also cancelled her gig at the Optimus Festival in Portugal.

Speaking to Us Weekly, the London based singer said: "I actually felt something go pop or snap, or whatever. Whatever it is, it was very frightening. I had to really adjust because it happened in the middle of a show."

She added: "I had a full check up and he said that there wasn't any permanent damage that couldn't be restored without rest. So if I keep taking care of myself there won't be any reoccurrences."

Welch went on to say that she found it difficult to follow the doctor's orders, especially when it came to a caffine ban: "No tea, no coffee! That was the hardest part. I had been on such a caffeine kick up until then. I was fully back on five diet cokes a day and two coffees in the morning. I was really twitching my way through life, but I was completely loving it. And I had to cut it out completely. And I managed to get properly hurt again and had to cut everything out, so I'm back on the herbal tea."

Florence And The Machine are set to hold on to the Number One spot in the Official Singles Chart on Sunday (July 22) with 'Spectrum'. The track, which has been remixed by dance titan Calvin Harris, is currently outselling Maroon 5's 'Payphone', but the sales figures are extremely tight, meaning the race for Number One will go down to the wire, reports the Official Charts Company.
