Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis is teaming up with American composer Rhys Chatham for a concert in Liverpool tonight (September 14) featuring 100 guitarists.

The free event, entitled 'A Crimson Grail', takes place at the city's Anglican Cathedral from 7.30pm (BST). It will mark the opening of the Liverpool Biennial, which is the largest international contemporary art festival in the UK.

Speaking about his involvement in the project Philippakis told BBC 6 Music:

I first heard the piece a couple of years ago and it bowled me over because it's got such instant power and there's something incredibly dramatic and peaceful about it at the same time.

He added: "I listened to it a lot and I listened to it falling asleep and walking around empty city streets. I just heard through the grapevine that it was being performed and I wanted to be part of it."

Chatham is best-known for his guitar orchestras and has worked with Philip Glass, Sonic Youth and Robert Fripp of King Crimson. Foals are currently working on their third album, which Philippakis recently told NME sounds "unashamedly funk".
