Foo Fighters and Radiohead enjoy huge sales spike on Record Store Day 2011

Gorillaz also enjoy success as physical sales reach an all time high

Record Store Day 2011 figures enjoyed an all time high this year with rare albums by Foo Fighters and Gorillaz topping sales figures.

According to the Official Charts Company sales of physical singles through independent record stores were more than double last year's total and album sales were up 20 per cent.

Foo Fighters' covers album 'Medium Rare' proved to be the most popular vinyl album closely followed by Gorillaz' 'The Fall' album which was originally released in the form of a free download for fans on Christmas Day.

On the single sales front Queen's 7 inch vinyl re-issue of 'Keep Yourself Alive' and Radiohead's previously unreleased tracks 'Supercollider' and 'The Butcher' also proved popular.

Record Store Day co-ordinator Spencer Hickman said: "Record Store Day has been an overwhelming success. It seems to have struck a chord with artists, labels and music fans alike. It is now one of the most significant music events of the year."

Around 180 stores took part in this year's Record Store Day on April 16 and 250 exclusive releases were made available in participating stores.
