Foo Fighters' new album will feature a host of special guests from eight cities in the US.

The news comes with details of the eight-part TV series for HBO that will document the making of their new album. Frontman Dave Grohl will operate as director on the project, following his Sound City documentary of 2013.

Each of the eight episodes will see the band travel to a different US cities to write and record the album: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, DC and New York. In each location, they visited a renowned studio to record a track for the album – due this autumn – that Grohl describes as "a love letter to the history of American music".

Each song features local musical figures, and every lyric was written on the very last day of each session, meaning the experiences and personalities became part of the process. Guests include Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy.

Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, says: "Dave's heartfelt passion for this project is contagious and his talent as a musician and filmmaker is undeniable. We are excited to go on this journey with him and the Foo Fighters for this insider’s look at how regional music inspired them to create their own new music."

Earlier this month, the band played a career-spanning set at Washington DC's 9.30 Club in tribute to the band Trouble Funk. Last month (April 30), they shared pictures of the recording sessions for their new album. According to producer Butch Vig, the LP is "almost halfway done" and will see the band experimenting with some challenging recording techniques to keep everyone focused.

The band revealed in January that sessions for their new album were "fucking on" by posting a picture of a row of master tapes labelled 'Foo Fighters LP 8' to their official Instagram. Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Grohl said: "I know what it sounds like and I honestly think the entire concept is really going to take people by surprise and it sounds nuts."

Foo Fighters released their last album, 'Wasting Light', in 2011.
