FRANK BLACK'S SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE

Ex-[a]Pixies[/a] frontman on the record that reminds him of his tragic first love and the film soundtrack that he'll have played at his funeral...

FRANK BLACK'S SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE
FIRST RECORD YOU CAN REMEMBER

'Brand New Key' - Melanie

"My brother, Errol, was very fond of that Melanie record, it must have been my mother's 45. Actually, there was also a 45 of a song that Oscar The Grouch from Sesame Street sang and then Frank Sinatra's 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown'. Those were the first records I can remember."

SONG THAT REMINDS YOU OF SCHOOL

'Franpton Comes Alive!' - Peter Frampton

"That Frampton record was huge when I was in sixth grade. It always reminds me of that particular time, although I never actually owned it, it was just sort of around. I had much cooler records when I was in sixth grade, like The Beatles' 'White Album'."

SONG YOU FELL IN LOVE TO

'The Point' - Harry Nilsson

"It was the soundtrack to an animated film called The Point, with that song 'Me And My Arrow'. The teacher showed it in class one day. I think I was probably falling in love with Pipsy Trackenberg about that time. That was in the fourth grade."

HEARTBREAK TUNE

'Me And My Arrow' - Harry Nilsson

"It all happened that day in the classroom with Pipsy. Then she moved away and I lost her forever. Although I did get a personalised letter from her once, but I never wrote back. Pipsy was gone."

SONG THAT EVOKES THE GREATEST SUMMER OF YOUR LIFE

'Hotel California' - The Eagles

"I don't even know if it was the summer, you know, because it's sort of eternal summer in California. But I just remember that summery feeling, out on my bike or my skateboard, alone down on the strand or the boardwalk in various beach towns just outside of LA. That lonely, dissatisfied feeling that you get on a warm summer's day. Most of my greatest summer memories are of those times, entertaining myself on long afternoons until I had to be home for dinner."

SONG FOR A NIGHT ON THE TILES

'Child In Time' - Deep Purple

"It's a great song. I don't remember any particular instance - but that's the song to listen to when you're in your automobile, preparing for battle."

RECORD THAT INSPIRED YOU TO FORM A BAND

'Shaved Fish' - John Lennon

"It must have been a Beatles record, though I don't know which one it was, really. But by the time I was ten I had pretty much the entire Beatles catalogue as well as their solo records. Actually, let's give the credit to that John Lennon album that had 'Woman Is The Of The World' on it - 'Shaved Fish'. That had a particularly big impact on me."

RECORDS GUARANTEED TO CLEAR THE TOURBUS

'Love You Til Tuesday' - David Bowie - 'MAan Of Words man Of Music' - David Bowie

"Or, in my case, the question would be the tour 'van'. The last time that I played it was sort of the first time I played it. So it didn't clear the van, but I imagine if I play it again it might. I bought this tape at a truckstop that's like a combination of the first two David Bowie albums from the late-'60s. All those songs that sound kinda like theatre music; it's pretty wild stuff, and it's great, but it's also pretty annoying. No, maybe I shouldn't say that. David Bowie will read it or something, and I'll never work again."

NEW YEAR'S EVE 1999, WHAT'S ON THE HI-FI?

'Singles - Going Steady' - The Buzz s

"I should say an opera record, but I don't know anything about opera. Let's see, how about that compilation of singles by The Buzz s? Yeah, that's it. That's a good celebratory record, and that sounds like a good way to end the century - drinking champagne, listening to The Buzz s."

RECORD YOU WOULD LIKE PLAYED AT YOUR FUNERAL

'Repo Man Soundtrack' - Various

"It's got a little bit of everything, a bit of Iggy Pop, a bit of The Plugs... a smattering of all kinds of punky stuff. A fun, upbeat collection of numbers for my funeral. And, best of all, it's got The Circle Jerks' 'When The Hits The Fan'."
