Frank Ocean plays new tracks 'Feel California' and ' Anything For You' at sold out London show
The 'Channel Orange' singer plays the O2 Academy Brixton again tonight (July 10)
The performance was the Odd Future member and Grammy Award winning singer's first show in the UK capital since he played XOYO in 2011 and was the biggest European headline show of his career so far. He plays the same venue again tonight (July 10).
At one point he told the crowd that he was testing things out whist he was on the road, telling the enthusiastic audience to "bear with me" before playing a new song, thought to be called 'Anything For You', which features the lyrics: "I’d rather live outside/I’d rather chip my pride than lose my mind out here... Maybe I’m a fool/ Or maybe I should move and settle/two kids and a swimming pool." Ocean also opened his set with new song 'Feel California'. He debuted both new songs last month in Munich.
As well as playing a number of new tracks, Ocean also sang a totally acapella version of 'Nostalgia Ultra' track 'Swim Good', with the vast majority of fans in the crowd singing loudly along with him. He started singing the song after stopping 'Golden Girl' only a few seconds into the track, picking up the song again after the mass singalong. Backed by a live suited six-piece band, he sang a number of tracks sitting down and kneeled at the front of the stage of the beginning part of the epic 'Pyramids'.
In a printed white T-shirt and blue camouflage trousers, an evidently overwhelmed Ocean spoke little to the crowd, commenting: "I don't usually much talking and I don't say this everywhere but this is one of my favourite cites in the whole world." Ocean performed most of his set in front of footage of gold car driving on a salt flat, with his final tracks backed by a tape of a burning palm tree. Ocean finished the hour and a half long performance with a seated rendition of 'Wise Man', the song which he wrote for Quentin Tarantino's 2012 movie Django Unchained.
Frank Ocean recently updated his blog to say that the tour "isn't in support of an album" and funding for his dates is coming "from my pocket". He wrote: "All the travel isn’t in support of an album or anything like that really - past or ahead. There’s no label or touring firm dollars involved. All pennies from my pocket. In support of some odd daydream. Ops to photograph crowds and clouds from planes. Contrast all the quiet with some noise. New noise and old noise..sober crowd, faded crowd. All welcome."
Ocean will perform at the Wireless Festival in London this weekend. The festival takes place between July 12-14 at London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. He will also play T In The Park festival in Scotland.
