Frank Turner paid tribute to Nirvana’s famous 1992 performance at Reading Festival this afternoon (August 23) by re-enacting Kurt Cobain’s iconic entrance where he was brought onstage in a wheelchair.

The singer did the same thing at the beginning of his set on the Main Stage, where Nirvana played their last ever UK show. He then jumped up and launched into opener 'If I Every Stray'.

The performance came after the singer revealed earlier this week that he had been forced to cancel a handful of European festival dates due to a back injury and joked that he would play Reading and Leeds Festivals even if it meant doing both dates in a wheelchair. He added: "Speaking of the future, people coming to Hatfield, Reading and Leeds need not worry – the shows will go ahead, we are working on a plan, and if I have to do them in a wheelchair I will. Everyone in my team, from the Sleeping Souls on down, are being really great about making sure that the show goes on. Thanks for your patience and good wishes."

During today's set he encouraged the crowd to sing along to a host of tracks from his recent album 'Tape Deck Heart' including singles 'Recovery' and 'The Way I Tend To Be', the latter of which saw the singer introduce a new acoustic guitarist onstage, who was performing only his second show.

He also apologised to the crowd for not being in the UK for a while and said it was great to be back home before he announced plans for a new UK tour next year, with dates announced later this weekend. During 'Wessex Boy' he also had a rant at the music industry when he declared: "At the end of this song there is a singalong section. Music isn't about backstage passes and record companies and all that shit. It's about music for everyone, am I right? So, in the true spirit of rock'n'roll, sing along with me."

He went on to wrap up his set with 'I Still Believe', taken from his 2010 EP 'Rock'n'Roll'.

Further acts set to appear on the Main Stage today include Green Day, System Of A Down and Deftones.
