Gail Zappa loses fight in German court

Zappa widow fails to stop use of Frank Zappa name in festival
Gail Zappa has lost a court case in Germany in which she tried to prevent the use of her late husband Frank Zappa’s name and image.

The Zappanele festival, which has been running annually since 1990, uses Zappa’s image on its merchandise, and has a bronze sculpture of the legend at its site in Bad Doberan.

The court found that Gail Zappa knew about the festival when it started, which was three years before her husband’s death. She did not apply to patent the use of his name in Germany until 2002, according to Reuters.

In addition to attempting to ban the use of the Zappa name, she was seeking the removal of the sculpture and $325,000 in damages.

The Zappanale festival will take place this year from August 12-16. The festival each year sees bands performing the material of Frank Zappa.
