Franz Ferdinand played an intimate gig on New Year's Eve in a friend's EDINBURGH flat, after their HOGMANAY show for more than 100,000 people was cancelled.

The band had been scheduled to step on stage just after midnight at the city's Concert In The Gardens, joining a bill also featuring Coral and Erasure, but the show was pulled due to bad weather.

Singer Alex Kapranos said: "The stage roof had been leaking and the amplifiers were soaked. The weather was crazy but because we were inside we didn’t give it much thought. Then we got this phone call saying everything was off. Everyone was aghast."

Instead of admitting defeat, the band soon decided to take their party across the city.

According to The Scotsman, Kapranos added: "We thought of different places, then said, ‘Let’s play at someone’s party in a flat’. A couple of friends were having a party in Marchmont. It was quite a big room - although compared to the gig we were supposed to do it was tiny. But the atmosphere couldn’t have been better."

The gig proved to be a return to Franz Ferdinand's roots, as Kapranos explained: "It is exactly how we started off with the band - we would play people’s parties. In a way it’s more exciting than a big show."
