Albums of 2008: Band want to shake things up on third LP
Franz Ferdinand have revealed the reason why they hired Girls Aloud’s producer to help out on their new album was so they didn’t repeat themselves.
The band begin recording the follow-up to 2005’s ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’ with Brian Higgins from Xenomania later this month, with a release expected this year.
Frontman Alex Kapranos told NME.COM: “We could easily make a ‘Franz Ferdinand by numbers’ record, but there’s no point, no enjoyment in making a record like that. If we wanted to make a record like that we would have released it last year, that’s why we’ve been taking our time to push ourselves.”
Having spent 2007 busy writing, the band have around 18 tracks they’ll be tackling during sessions with Higgins at their own rehearsal studio in Glasgow.
Songs set for inclusion on the record include ‘Turn It On’, ‘What She Came For’ and ‘Ulysses’.
Kapranos added: “When you make a good record it should feel like you’re making a best of record. You’ve got a whole pile of songs about you and the album is the best of that year. That’s the way we’ve been approaching it.
“This way of working has been a lot more natural for us. When we wrote the second record we had two weeks to write it and I don’t think that’s a healthy environment. Sometimes ideas evolve over a few months and what you start off from and end up with are often different and usually better than where you started.”
