Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos has defended Jonathan Ross after his band performed at the filming of his chat show yesterday (January 22).

The Scottish rockers performed new single 'Ulysses' at the recording of 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross', set to air on BBC1 tonight at 10:35pm (GMT). The show marks Ross' return to broadcasting after being suspended for making lewd prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs with Russell Brand on BBC Radio 2.

Kapranos told The Guardian that he thought Ross had been treated harshly, and was glad he was back on TV.

"There are some people who want to be offended no matter what, and they are going to look for offence in anything someone like Jonathan Ross is going to say," he said.

He added, "I suppose he had to apologise, but we've done the show a few times before and it just felt like Jonathan Ross back doing his thing."

Other guests on Ross' show tonight include Tom Cruise, Stephen Fry and Lee Evans.

Meanwhile, Franz Ferdinand have completed the line-up for the 2009 Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig.

The Scots will play ahead of The Cure's full 90-minute set at the 02 Arena in London on February 26. To check the availability of Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2009 tickets and get all the latest news, go to NME.COM/biggig.

Crystal Castles and White Lies are also on the bill.

The show takes place the day after this year's Shockwaves NME Awards ceremony, which is being held at Brixton Academy, and will see The Cure crowned as 2009 Godlike Geniuses.
