Police in the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo used pepper spray and tear gas against fans who were queuing to see Franz Ferdinand's show over the weekend, according to reports.

The band performed at gig on Sunday (May 27) in the early evening and drew a larger than expected crowd to their show in the city's Independence Park. As a result, many fans were left outside after organisers closed the gates.

As the queue lengthened, some fans apparently tried to climb the fence to get into the show and police opted to use tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the crowd, according to Folha.uol.com.

The festival's organisers have issued a statement, in which they say they regretted so many fans were kept outside and the police were forced to take such drastic measures.

Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos took to Twitter to apologise to fans and said he and his bandmates had no idea what was going on outside the park. He wrote: "Hope any fans caught outside the gig tonight were OK and weren't hurt in this collision with the police I'm hearing about."

The Scottish band released their last album 'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand' in January 2009 and have been working on its follow-up for the last year. They will now commence a run of live dates which includes Primavera Sound, Berlin Festival, Osheaga festival, Open'er fesival and London's Field Day.
