Gary Glitter could be freed in May

The disgraced star may escape his three-year sentence early

Gary Glitter could be released as early as May from his three-year jail sentence for molesting two Vietnamese girls.

Prison chiefs at the Thu Duc detention centre, where he is being held, have revealed that he is on the list of inmates being considered for early release as part of this month's Lunar New Year celebrations.

On his prospects for release, Tran Huu Thong, director of Thu Duc, told BBC 6 Music: “He meets all the crieteria”, adding that nearly all the prisoners recommended for early release receive it.

If returned to the UK, Glitter would be placed back on the sex offenders register, and could be subject to further charges under the Sex Offences Act 2003.

Glitter was jailed in March for sexually attacking two girls aged 10 and 11 in Vung Tau, Vietnam.
