George Harrison is to be given a posthumous award for his contribution to British film.

The former Beatle died last year after a lengthy battle against cancer.

He will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts with independent film at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) next Wednesday (October 30), according to the Reuters news service.

[a][/a] had his own film company, Handmade, and worked in film from the late '70s.

Handmade worked on films including 'The Life Of Brian' and 'Withnail and I'.

The British Independent Film Awards acknowledge achievement in independently funded British filmmaking.
