George Michael to play first Wembley Stadium gig

George Michael has been announced as the first artist to play at the re-opened Wembley Stadium.

Michael will play the gig at the London venue on June 9 at the newly rebuilt 90,000 capacity venue, as part of his summer European tour.

Michael played Live Aid at the venue in 1985 as well as the the farewell concert of his former band Wham! in 1986.

Alex Horne, managing director of Wembley Stadium, said it was “fantastic news” that Michael would perform the first concert at the venue.

He told BBC News: “He’s no stranger to this great stage having performed at the old stadium with both Wham! at Live Aid and as a solo artist.

“This is a fitting first gig in the new stadium. We are looking forward to putting the stadium back on the world map as a major music destination.”

As previously reported, Muse will be the first band to play at the London stadium, with two dates on June 16 and 17.
