George Michael 'on drugs' court told

George Michael was on a cocktail of drugs when he was arrested in his car last year, a court heard today (May 29).

The singer has admitted driving while unfit, but lawyers argued that this condition was caused by prescription drugs.

The singer was arrested in October 2006 after motorists reported a driver slumped over the wheel of a Mercedes at traffic lights in north London.

Prosecutor Andrew Torrington told Brent Magistrates Court that tests showed a therapeutic quantity of an anti-depressant in the singer's system as well as the illegal dance drug GHB.

Cannabis was also found in his blood, but the prosecution did not maintain that this was the cause of his intoxication, reports BBC News.

Michael’s lawyer claimed a sleeping drug was the most likely explanation for his condition. He also told the court it was common for traces of GHB to be found in the blood even if the drug had not been taken.

District Judge Katherine Marshall agreed the issue at stake was not the drug involved but the condition Michael was in when he was discovered in his car in October last year.

Michael has already pleaded guilty to driving while unfit under the influence of drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail.

Sentencing was put back to June 8. He is due the perform the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium the next day.
