Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly discusses US debut
Sam Duckworth's album hits Stateside tomorrow
Recently nominated for NME's Solo Artist of the Year Award, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly caught up with NME.COM on the eve of the American release of 'The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager' via Atlantic Records.
"It's quite exciting and surreal that it's being released outside of the UK for the first time," Duckworth told NME.COM.
"It's really important that it's out there so people have the opportunity to hear it and buy it. Whether they will or not is another story," he laughed.
Although Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly has achieved notoriety in the UK for his melding of folk and protest traditions with modern lap-top generated sounds, he's on fairly new ground in the United States, never having released an album here and playing only a few scattered dates including Austin's South by Southwest Festival last month, where he had to cancel several shows due to illness.
"I'm on the mend now," 21-year-old Duckworth reassured. "I hope to come back to tour in the US in August between all the UK festivals. But I don't feel mass amounts of pressure. We can do some shows and have it grow properly."
Duckworth said that although it would be great to "crack America", he focuses more on his craft and the enjoyment of the process.
"A lot of artists come over from the UK and try to crack America," he said. "But the core of what you do is play music--otherwise you leave behind the enjoyment and soul of what you're doing."
As for being dubbed the voice of a new generation, "I'd rather be known as the voice that encouraged people to start thinking again," he said.
