Girls Aloud have confirmed that they have split up following the culmination of their UK tour in Liverpool last night (March 20).

Posting a message on Twitter after the show had ended, the group described their final tour as "amazing" and said they had "come to the end of our incredible time together". It had previously been speculated that the group, who consist of Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding, Kimberley Walsh, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle, would call it quits and that they made a pact last year to keep their big farewell a secret.

The statement reads: "Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!! This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade. It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!!

"Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together. Love you lots."

Girls Aloud released five studio albums between 2003 and 2008, having originally formed as the winners of [i]Popstars: The Rivals[i] in 2002. The group earned three UK Number One singles in their career, including 'The Promise', 'I'll Stand By You' and 'Sound of the Underground'. A greatest hits album, 'Ten', was released in 2012.
