90,000 fans arrive onsite for 2009 Glastonbury Festival early

Worthy Farm is filling up ahead of musical action

A record number of festivalgoers have descended on Glastonbury site early, over 24 hours before the music officially kicks off.

The main stages at the Somerset festival do not open until tomorrow (June 26), but according to organisers 90,936 fans had arrived on the site as of this afternoon (June 25) – a 30 per cent increase on the numbers who arrived early last year.

The doors of the festival were opened yesterday morning (June 24) at 8am (BST).

According to the festival's authorities, as of 4pm (BST) today 370 festivalgoers had received medical attention, compared to 279 people last year at the same time.

Maximo Park are set to play a set later today at the Queen's Head tent. See NME.COM for a full report of this curtain-raising performance.

I remember arriving on the Wednesday guaranteed you a good spot and Wednesday night was always a half full site, and it made you feel a bit special. Now most people arrive on Wednesday, proof that it's not all about the bands!
