Glasvegas: 'We bet on Metallica to get to Number One'

Glasvegas' Rab Allan has revealed that he bet money on Metallica to score a Number One album yesterday (September 14).

Glasvegas were in the running for the Number One slot in the mid-week charts with their self-titled debut, but Metallica's 'Death Magnetic' ended up hitting the Number One spot after being released on Wednesday (September 10).

"I'm going to the bookies to put money on Metallica," the guitarist told BBC 6Music before he found out the chart result. "Either way I'm going to win. Either I get money for that or I go to Number One."

Sales figures seen by NME.COM show that Metallica's album sold just over 75,000 copies, while Glasvegas' total of 56,000 copies would have been enough to secure them a Number One in any other week.

Kings Of Leon's 'Sex On Fire', which debuted at Number One in the singles chart, sold 44,943 copies, ending Katy Perry's five week reign at the top of the charts, as 'I Kissed A Girl' slid to Number Two selling 37,902 copies.

Reflecting the difference in fanbases, Cliff Richard actually sold more physical copies of his Number Three single 'Thank You For A Lifetime' - 31,765 copies - than the rest of the Top 75's physical sales put together.
