Canadian art rockers GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! wrapped up their sold out three-night residency at NEW YORK's BOWERY BALLROOM last night (December 7) to an enthusiastic downtown crowd.
Playing the consecutive shows in Manhattan "wasn't cool and wasn't uncool," percussionist Bruce exclusively told NME.COM after the show. "It was just
part of the tour. But it was nice to have the days to wander New York."
The enigmatic nine-piece group brought the music to a complete stop only three times during their often-mesmerising hour and a half set. Video, film and still images played on a screen behind the stage, including faded colour footage of New York.
The band barely faced the audience, much less acknowledged them as they performed. However during the lullaby of a second encore one member wandered through the thinned-out crowd beating a snare drum while a second banged on objects in the balcony and worked his way back down to the floor. The show ended with both still in the audience.
GYBE! are nearing the end of their tour in support of the recent double album 'Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven'. The band, which played a handful of UK dates in late November, play two more US shows before a homecoming gig at Montreal's Theatre Olympic on December 10.
Meanwhile, Godspeed founder and guitarist Efrim is joined by the band's Sophie and Thierry on violin and bass respectively, performing as A Silver Mt Zion, for a tour of Europe in January.
The UK dates are:
Brighton The Pavillion Theatre (January 15)
Birmingham Medicine Bar (16)
Dublin Whelans (17)
Belfast The Empire (18)
Glasgow King Tut's Wah Wah Hut (19)
Leeds The Cockpit (20)
Manchester University (21)
London Union Chapel (22)
Colchester Arts Centre (23)
