Gorillaz cartoonist Jamie Hewlett has been named designer of the year.
Hewlett claimed the £25,000 prize at the Design Museum in London last night (May 22).
He was rewarded for his work devising the graphics, website, animations and “live” performances by the virtual band, which he conceived with Blur frontman Damon Albarn.
They have released two wildly successful albums – 2001’s ‘Gorillaz’ and 2005’s ‘Demon Days’.
Chair of the jury Sir Christopher Frayling said: “Jamie Hewlett has not only created a personal mythology with the virtual band Gorillaz, he has also created designs for the direction in which technology and culture are going, the shape of things to come.”
Other finalists included furniture and lighting designer Tom Dixon, The Guardian’s redesign team, and Cameron Sinclair, for his work with humanitarian design group Architecture For Humanity.
