DC Comics origin story for Commissioner Gordon
Channel 5 have acquired Batman spin-off Gotham. The show expands the DC Comics universe with an origin story for Commisioner Gordon – played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions, Katie Keenan, brokered the deal: “I don’t think there was a more exciting show at the LA screenings this year – Gotham is a thrilling drama built on iconic characters that fascinate. Channel 5 is delighted to become the home of such a powerful, bold and visually stunning show.”
The series will draw on the origin story of a pre-Batman Gotham City following Gordon’s rise through the ranks of the police department and the just orphaned Bruce Wayne in the dark days of the city before the Dark Knight rises.
The cast includes Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) as Gordon and Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy>/i>) as brash cop legend Harvey Bullock. Also starring Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix Reloaded) and Sean Pertwee (Elementary), the series sees Gordon navigate the layers of corruption that secretly rule Gotham City – the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains, the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker.
The official synopsis reveals:
“Although the crime drama will follow Gordon’s turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara, Burn Notice), it also will focus on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, Alfred (Pertwee).”
From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome)Gotham premieres in the US on September 22 and will air in the UK on Channel 5 and Demand 5 this autumn.
