‘Gotham’ creator confirms The Joker will appear in TV show

Bruno Heller says he is 'the crown jewel of Batman villains'

Bruno Heller, director of Batman TV spin-off Gotham has confirmed that The Joker will appear in the series at some point.

The Fox TV series starts later this year (2014) and tells the story of a young Jim Gordon as he begins work as a policeman in the corrupt US city, home to a young Bruce Wayne as well as Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler and Poison Ivy.

Speaking about other iconic characters who could appear, Heller told Entertainment Weekly that The Joker is also likely to pop up, though the character has not yet been cast. “He’s the crown jewel of the Batman villains,” Heller said. “He will be brought in with great care and a lot of thought.”

Meanhwile, Heller adds that casting child actor David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne convinced him to increase the role the character will play in Gotham. Describing him as, “the best actor ever to play the part”, Heller adds: “He is a genuine prodigy of an actor, as you will see on screen. Before David was cast, I was ambivalent about how much we would use Bruce Wayne in the series. What do you do with a 12-year-old kid? [But] like I say, he’s off-the-charts talented.”

Commisioner Gordon is played for former The OC and Southland actor Ben Mckenzie with Jada Pinkett Smith and Sean Pertwee also set to appear.

Gotham will premiere on Fox in the US this autumn, with a UK air date yet to be confirmed. The series is being steered by The Mentalist creator Heller. See below to watch a trailer now.
