Green Day have begun working on the follow up to 2004’s ’American Idiot’.

The band posted a brief note on Greenday.com explaining that they have starting writing material for their new album.

The post reads: “Billie, Mike and Tre are back from summer vacations working hard on new material for the next Green Day album. Stay tuned for more news next week.”

As previously reported by NME.COM in June, the band began working on dozens of ideas and demos for the new project, and have been calling the album “an event”.

Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV: “At this point, to put a record out with like 12 songs on it and turn it in sounds a bit boring for us. So we want to definitely make something that is well thought out and (that) all of our blood is put into.”
