Tickets for Green Day's musical 'American Idiot' have gone on sale early – while frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has said it could end up becoming a film.

The musical, based on the band's 2004 album, directed by Michael Mayer, is set to debut in the Berkeley Repertory Theatre on September 4. Tickets went on sale on Friday (August 7) from the theatre's official website, Berkeleyrep.org. Phone and in-person sales will commence on August 16.

Meanwhile, frontman Armstrong has outlined his wish for the production to one day become a feature film.

"I thought 'American Idiot' had a lot in common with something like 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'," he told Associated Press. "It would great to see a film made out of it someday too."

'American Idiot' will run at the theatre until October 11. Although it will not feature the band performing, theatre chiefs have claimed that it will still "definitely rock".
