Green Day are reportedly eyeing The Twilight Saga star Robert Pattinson for the lead role in the film adaptation of the musical which is based around their 2004 album 'American Idiot'.

The film, which is set to be produced by actor Tom Hanks in collaboration with Green Day themselves, is currently in pre-production, with potential actors being targeted.

According to US gossip website Perez Hilton, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has said he would like Pattinson to play the lead role in the musical. Responding to a question about who he would most like to star in the film, Armstrong replied: "I'm going to say that kid in Twilight. He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid."

Initial reports about the film were that Armstrong himself would take the lead role, having done so on Broadway earlier this year, but this would now appear to not be the case. AFI frontman Davey Havok has also acted in the musical's lead role, but is unlikely to be in contention for the film role.

The film adaptation is likely to be directed by Michael Mayer, who also took charge of the Broadway production and written by Milk writer Dustin Lance Black. It is being targeted for a cinema release in 2013.

Green Day are currently working on the follow-up to their 2009 eighth studio album '21st Century Breakdown'.
