Billie Joe Armstrong has joined the US version of The Voice.

The Green Day frontman will serve as mentor to Christina Aguilera's contestants on the TV singing contest. Aguilera's fellow "coaches" on the show are Cee-Lo Green, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and country singer Blake Shelton.

In a statement reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Armstrong explained why he is a fan of the US talent show. He said: "It's not moulding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover."

Armstrong, who began shooting The Voice on Wednesday (July 25), also revealed that working with Aguilera is "a lot of fun". The new season of The Voice will begin on US network NBC on September 10.

Green Day are set to release a trilogy of albums, collectively titled '¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!', over the next six months. The first album in the trilogy, '¡Uno!', is due on September 24 and is being trailed by the single 'Oh Love' - scroll down to watch the lyric video.

The British version of The Voice, featuring Tom Jones, will.i.am, Jessie J and The Script's Danny O'Donoghue as "coaches", aired earlier this year (2012) to fluctuating ratings. It will return for a second season in 2013, but the show's panel has yet to be confirmed. Earlier this week (July 23), Jones revealed that he is keen to return - so long as he has veto over his fellow coaches.
