Green Day have given an update on their frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's condition after he was rushed to hospital over the weekend and have revealed that the singer was stricken with severe dehydration and influenza, which forced them to cancel their show in Italy on Sunday (September 2).

Armstrong's bandmate Mike Dirnt told MTV News that the singer was vomiting constantly and, although he wanted to do the gig, he knew that it would be "hard to sing while you're puking".

Asked about the singer's illness, Dirnt said: "Billie came down with heavy, heavy dehydration; it was like severe dehydration, influenza, and it was just a really, really bad situation. He woke up in the morning and it was bad. Let's put it this way, if you're in your hotel room and you're vomiting profusely, it's not fun. So what are you gonna do? It's hard to sing while you're puking."

Dirnt promised that the band would make up their cancelled show in Bologna "ASAP" and said that they were devastated as they've only shelved five gigs in their entire career.

He said when asked about rescheduling the show: "We're going to make our way back to Bologna and play that show ASAP. We don't miss many shows; we've maybe missed five shows out of our entire career and we pride ourselves on that, but we're human."

Last week Green Day announced a huge UK stadium show for next summer. The trio will headline London's 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium on June 1, 2013. Tickets for the show will go onsale at the end of next month on September 28.

The band's new album trilogy, '¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!', will be released in three stages. The first album, '¡Uno!', comes out on September 24, with the second LP, '¡Dos!', coming out on November 12 and '¡Tré!' on January 14, 2013.

To coincide with the release of '¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!', the band are also putting out a pair of documentaries. One is being made by Tim Lynch, a producer of the band's recent DVD Green Day: Bullet In A Bible, and Tim Wheeler, a co-producer and editor of The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights. It will focus on the making of the band's three new albums. A second documentary is being created from vintage footage shot during the band's pre-'Dookie' days.
