Green Day have paid tribute to a teenage fan who died unexpectedly of natural causes.

The band paid their respects to 17-year-old Kaelem Hainsworth from Dublin, after the teenager's family and friends launched a campaign online to urge the band to send a special video message and play at the youngster's funeral service tomorrow (November 22).

Although no confirmation of any gig was forthcoming, bassist Mike Dirnt took to the band's official site Greenday.com to pay tribute to the teenager who died on Sunday (November 18).

He wrote:

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Kaelem Hainsworth, a Green Day fan in Dublin passed away suddenly at the young age of 17, and we want to send our deepest condolences to Kaelem's family and friends.

Dirnt added: "His funeral is this Thursday, which falls on Thanksgiving in the United States, and hearing sad news around the holidays always makes it more upsetting. Kaelem you will forever be missed."

The late teenager's friends expressed their thanks to Dirnt in the comments section of the blog post, but they are still holding out hope that Green Day will film a brief video for the service.

Green Day recently cancelled all their scheduled live appearances for the remainder of 2012 and early 2013 after Billie Joe Armstrong checked into rehab.
