Shaun Ryder defends 'rock and roll' Miley Cyrus
'If she wasn't having sex and doing drugs, she wouldn't be rock and roll,' says the Happy Mondays frontman
Cyrus has courted controversy in recent months, first by twerking onstage with Robin Thicke at September's MTV Video Music Awards, and then by unveiling a video for her single 'Wrecking Ball' in which she appears naked and is seen licking a sledgehammer provocatively.
"I think Miley Cyrus is great," Ryder told the Daily Star. "She's a kid, she's young. If she wasn't having sex and doing drugs, she wouldn't be rock and roll. That's what it's all about – not that I'd dream of going on a night out with her. I've no idea about clubs. I don't even go in pubs, never mind clubs."
Cyrus's godmother Dolly Parton has also defended the pop singer's recent antics, insisting her goddaughter has "thought all this through". "I don't think people really realise yet what a great singer and writer she really is," Parton added.
Meanwhile, the Happy Mondays frontman's new TV series Shaun Ryder On UFOs is set to begin tomorrow (November 10) on the History channel. According to the channel, the show sees Ryder "embark on an extra-terrestrial adventure taking him from the mountains of Chile to the fields and forests of England." Watch a trailer here.
