Hope Of The States unveil new direction
Hope Of The States have revealed that their upcoming second album marks a change in direction for the band.

The group are set to release the follow-up to 2004’s debut ‘The Lost Riots’ – entitled ‘Left’ – in May and have said that it sounds like “Joy Division goes disco.”

"It doesn't really sound anything like the first record,” singer Sam Herlihy said. “There's a lot more songs as opposed to big, sort of, noise things. We just got a bit bored doing that, really. So it's a bit more concise than the first record. It's a bit more guitary."

The first single to be lifted from ‘Left’ is going to be ‘Blood Meridian’, with Herlihy explaining fans can expect its release “very soon” and supported with a small venue tour next month.

Speaking to BBC 6Music, the frontman explained that the new album was recorded in a variety of different studios around the world with producer Ken Thomas, who worked on ‘The Lost Riots’.

"We went to Prague and did strings and (worked with) a 15-piece male voice choir,” he said. “They didn't speak English... So I was having to write things down phonetically so they could sing it."

The choir will appear on the tracks ‘The Good Fight’ and ‘Sing It Out’.

Describing ‘Sing It Out’, Herlihy said: “(It) is like a ridiculous house song. Like Joy Division goes disco with a 15-piece choir."
