Interpol have cancelled the majority of their upcoming US tour, because U2 have been forced to postpone shows on their US jaunt.

The New York group, who were due to support the Irish band on a series of dates, have pulled 11 shows because of the impact that Bono's recent back surgery has had on U2's own US tour schedule.

"We lament the change in plans," the band said in a statement on their website InterpolNYC.com. "[We] apologize for the inconvenience, and assure you that we'll do you right - when the time is right and the light is nice."

Set to be the group's first tour since 2008, the previously confirmed dates in Rochester (June 21), Buffalo (22), Pittsburgh (23) and Allentown (25) are the only shows from the 15-date gig-run that have survived the cancellations.

Refunds from point of purchase are available for those affected.

Des Moines, IA People's Court (28)
Cincinnati, OH Bogart's (July 1)
Cleveland, OH House Of Blues (2)
Columbia, MO Blue Note (5)
Athens, GA Watt Club (8)
