Interpol have disputed the idea that they came close to splitting up and discussed their new album, the first since going on hiatus in 2010.

The band appear inside this week's NME, which is on newsstands or available digitally now. Interpol feature as part of a rundown of 100 albums to look forward to in 2014 containing exclusive studio reports and photos.

Speaking to NME about the new album, guitarist Daniel Kessler admits that extensive touring took its toll on the band prior to their decision to take a break following the release of 'Interpol' in 2010.

He said: "There was never any sense that we'd come to a breaking point or anything but if you play 200 shows and tour as hard as we did, you need time to get back to other elements of life, and start thinking about new songs."

That new material will take the shape of Interpol's forthcoming fifth album, due for release later this year. Discussing the band's new material, Kessler tells of a "new, natural energy" felt between the band while making the album.

He added: "We're never lacking ideas or inspiration. There's always something new to be said, and if you don't have something new to say, that's when you should take a break. We got back together because we felt that some of these songs had a certain urgency. It feels new again."
