Digital music sales almost doubled over the course of 2006, according to new figures.
A report by The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) revealed that global sales reached $2 billion (£1.1 billion) last year, leaping from 5.5 per cent of all music sales to 10 per cent.
The statistics showed that 795 million tracks were downloaded in 2006, up 89 per cent on 2005, while the number of tracks available doubled.
The organisation also reported that it filed lawsuits against 10,000 uploaders in 18 countries in 2006 including people in Brazil, Mexico, Poland and Portugal.
Despite the rise in digital sales, figures for overall music sales fell by 4 per cent following a decline in CD sales.
