Apple unveils new iPhone

New 3G S smart phone is faster and offers better battery life

Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone.

Called the iPhone 3G S - the 'S' stands for speed - Apple says the phone offers better battery life than previous models, as well as faster loading times for internet and gaming applications.

Apple's senior vice-president and marketing chief Phil Schiller announced the new product at the company's annual Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco yesterday (June 8).

Other new features on the iPhone 3G S include the ability to cut, copy and paste text, internet tethering and a tool allowing users to search the entire phone.

Users who own older models of the iPhone will be able to upgrade to the latest operating system for free on June 17, while the iPhone 3G S will be available to buy from O2 from June 19.

not quite sure how i'll match the insightful and constructive criticism of Umass, but this is great news. I always wanted an iPhone but the memory was too small to hold enough of my iTunes... off to the Apple shop!

People fall for this stuff, minor upgrades, apple is just milking you out of your money!

Wow! cut/paste, phone search and i-linking! Weren't BlackBerry and Nokia handsets doing this three years ago? How about putting a camera from the 21st Century, video and MMS on there instead of the ability to buy useless-but-pretty apps that tell you the relative humidity in Gabon?Oh, and while you're at it, why not unlock the handsets and free them from restrictive and (allegedly) ludicrously over-priced O2 contracts like they're forced to do on the continent?

The problem is that whilst I don't hugely rate the iPhone I feel that O2 are not a great match with Apple. In truth O2 are taking the gloss off the iPhone. They are the worst carrier in the UK and when I called them up to ask about iPhone upgrades I was just met by a chav spitting, 'No, you can't upgrade you have to do the full 18 months'. Truth be told indiewriter, you'll wish you had not signed up.to the o2 contract. the 18/24 months you will be on is a lifetime in the world of mobile and a better product on a better carrier will be along soon...
