Stroke killed Isaac Hayes

Soul singer's physician determines cause of death

Stroke killed Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes' cause of death was most likely a stroke, the Memphis sheriff's department said today (August 12).

The legendary soul singer died Sunday (August 10) after he was found unconscious near a treadmill in his home in Memphis, as previously reported.

An autopsy has not yet been performed, but Hayes' physician, Dr. David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke, sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular told the Associated Press. Kraus said that he had been treating Hayes for high blood pressure.

Hayes' Oscar- and Grammy-winning 'Theme From Shaft' is credited with laying the foundations of disco. The singer also provided the voice of Chef on the animated television show 'South Park' and recently finished work on the upcoming film 'Soul Man', which also stars comedian Bernie Mac, who passed away on Saturday (August 9).
