James Blunt's mum defends him against posh-bashers

James Blunt's mum has got in touch with BBC Radio 4's Today programme to defend her son against those who knock him for being too posh.

A programme on the show this morning (January 28) saw the topic of privately-educated pop stars debated, with producer Pete Waterman calling the music industry "snobbish".

Blunt, a former army officer who attended the private Harrow School and Elstree schools, wasn't mentioned, but his mum Jane Blount emailed the show anyway to give her views on the subject.

"I was most interested to hear Pete Waterman's thoughts on public school rock stars," she wrote. "His attitude is reflected by most of the critics in the UK. My son James Blunt, who is hugely appreciated worldwide, receives harsh criticism here and we have, rather sadly, been aware that it is because of his background."

She added: "We are relieved that on the whole James's fanbase take no notice of the critics."

Pop stars who were mentioned in the show included Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine, Chris Martin of Coldplay and Lily Allen.
