Jamie Cullum becomes ambassador for The Samaritans
Jamie Cullum has been named as The Samaritans’ new youth ambassador.

The jazz singer has backed the charity by having volunteers collect money for them at his concerts, and he also donates money from signed-picture sales on his website to the support group.

He now will join them officially to help promote their efforts. He said: “I’m genuinely delighted to be joining the Young Ambassadors to help Samaritans. I believe in the work of Samaritans’ volunteers.”

He added: “I have considered Samaritans one of my favourite charities for a long time and it’s good that younger people in society can do something positive to support such a worthwhile cause - especially when the young are also one of the higher risk groups, when it comes to needing emotional support.”

The Samaritans were founded in 1953 and provide confidential 24 hour support – via the phone line 08457 90 90 90 (1850 60 90 90 in the Republic of Ireland) – to anyone in emotional distress through their network of volunteers.

Cullum is not the only musician to back the group, with Radiohead drummer Phil Selway among The Samaritans' regular volunteers.
