Jamie T has spoken about his time out of the limelight, saying that he "never stopped writing" songs.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio 1 show earlier this week (August 11), Jamie T discussed his absence from the music industry since finishing touring 2009's 'Kings & Queens'. "I kind of felt at the end of the last record it was a good place to put a stop on it," he commented. "I've been doing this since I was a kid." He added that he took time out in order to keep his music fresh.

"It was a way of keeping my music as good as it could possibly be," he said. "I never stopped writing… I spent a long time trying to write traditional songs and felt I had to conquer the verse-chorus-bridge thing." He said that a third album began "appearing" a number of times, "but it didn't feel quite right". Jamie also explained that there had been some "personal stuff" as both of his parents had been ill "and that puts a full stop on everything".

He went on to say that it was only "quite recently" that he finally saw an album taking shape that he was happy with. "It's terrible to release material when you're not happy with it," he said. "I knew there was no point in rushing it."

Jamie T debuted his new single 'Zombie' on the show, which will feature on his long-awaited third album 'Carry On The Grudge', which is out on September 29. Speaking about the "upbeat" track, he said it was based on lingering teenage angst. "I thought my teenage angst would leave me. It was a shock to find out in my twenties it hadn't gone anywhere. It's a song about the frustrations of growing up." He also said that the reaction to his return was "heartwarming".

The singer-songwriter will tour the UK later this year, playing 10 dates in total, starting in Bristol on October 30. He will then visit Southampton, Norwich, Newcastle, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Birmingham, concluding with a huge homecoming gig at Alexandra Palace in London on November 14.
