'ArchAndroid' singer performs sold-out KOKO gig

Janelle Monáe plays second UK show of 2010 as she warms up for Bestival
Janelle Monáe warmed up for this weekend's Bestival by playing only her second UK show of the year last night (September 8).

Performing at London's KOKO, the singer managed to avoid the long delay which dogged her debut UK show in July, when she was forced to take to the stage at the Hoxton Square Bar And Grill an hour late after technical problems.

Following her band, who arrived onstage to the strains of 'Suite II Overture', the introduction from her debut album 'The ArchAndroid', Monáe arrived as one of three hooded dancers, only revealing her face as opener 'Dance Or Die' kicked in.

The singer then performed a medley of the first three songs from her album – 'Dance Or Die', 'Faster' and 'Locked Inside' – before dashing off the stage, leaving guitarist Kellindo Parker to perform a riff-heavy version of the US national anthem, before Monáe returned to cover Charlie Chaplin's 'Smile'.

After playing her two singles, 'Cold War' and 'Tightrope', Monáe left the stage again, though she returned for an encore featuring material from her debut EP, 'Metropolis: Suite 1 (The Chase)'.

Walking offstage once more, the singer reappeared to close the gig with 'Come Alive', releasing a sea of black and white balloons from the ceiling as the song reached its climax.

Janelle Monáe played:

'Suite II Overture'
'Dance Or Die'
'Faster'
'Locked Inside'
'Smile'
'Sincerely Jane'
'Wondaland'
'Mushrooms And Roses'
'Cold War'
'Tightrope'
'Many Moons'
'Violet Stars Happy Hunting!'
'Come Alive'

The singer will now play the Isle Of Wight's Bestival this weekend (September 10-12).
