Janelle Monae has been forced to postpone a string of US tourdates for "mandatory vocal rest".

The singer, who released her second full-length album 'The Electric Lady' on September 9, said in a statement on her website that she was postponing the shows on doctors' orders.

"Starting today, I am under strict doctor's orders for mandatory vocal rest," the statement reads. "Not doing so could possibly result in damage to my vocal chords.??"

"Unfortunately, this diagnosis means I will have to postpone my coming concerts in Anaheim, San Diego and Phoenix, a fact which truly leaves me heartsick and shaken because I live for this: connecting with you and giving you a one of a kind concert experience," she continues. "??But alas, apparently even the most expertly designed android breaks down sometimes and must recharge...??I promise to see you sooner than you think my friends, stronger than ever. ??I love you all dearly. ??My sincerest apologies."

The dates concerned were last night's show in Ahaheim's House of Blues (November 5), tonight's show in San Diego's House of Blues (November 6) and tomorrow's gig at Phoenix's The Crescent Ballroom (November 7).

'The Electric Lady' features a number of high-profile cameos including a collaboration with Prince on the track 'Givin Em What They Love' and a duet with Solange titled 'Electric Lady'. 'Primetime', her collaboration with Miguel, samples the Pixies' 1988 song 'Where Is My Mind?'.
