Jane's Addiction thrill at intimate LA gig
The reunited band stick to old material amidst new album rumours
The veteran rockers, who reunited for the first ever NME Awards USA last year and have been playing a handful of small shows around their hometown in recent months, pulled out a handful of hits for an adoring crowd at the Echoplex.
Looking stylish as ever in a black and white striped suit, frontman Perry Farrell was in top form, dancing around the stage, busting out flamenco moves and performing alongside ecstatic crowd surfers who made their way onto the stage.
"Thanks for this joint, my friend," Farrell said when someone tossed what looked like a giant marijuana cigarette onto the stage. "Do I look like I need that?" he quipped.
The band played several crowd-pleasers during their 45-minute set including 'Mountain Song', 'Ocean Size' and 'Ain't No Right'. They refrained from playing any new material, although there have been rumours that they've been recording a new album with Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.
"The last time we were with you all we were kinda broke, so when we saw something we wanted we just stole it," Farrell said when introducing their 1990 hit 'Been Caught Stealing'. A man in the crowd shouted back, "You fucking rock, Perry!"
Guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins had no trouble keeping the pace, matching Farrell's precision and enthusiasm note for note. The band concluded their brief set with 'Stop', taking a breather before they were called back for an encore of 'Had A Dad' and 'Ocean Size'.
