Janet Jackson speaks on split with label

It was her decision to quit Island Def Jam

Janet Jackson has spoken out about her split with record label Island Def Jam, the imprint responsible for the release of this year’s ‘Discipline’.

The singer has revealed that it was her choice to split with the label after she became frustrated with their work behind the record, resulting in what Jackson considers disappointing sales.

In a statement released to the press, Jackson’s rep says:

“At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship with the popular artist. Now, more than 20 years after the release of her iconic album, ’Control’, Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system.”

The statement also says that Jackson's new-found freedom is likely to have a positive effect on her career.

"Always known to break new ground and set trends, Janet's departure from Island makes her one of the first superstar artists to have the individual freedom to promote their work through a variety of avenues such as iTunes, mobile carriers and other diverse and innovative channels."

‘Discipline’ was the only album Jackson released via Island Def Jam.
