Jay-Z tops hip-hop rich list

Rapper beats the likes of P Diddy and Kanye West by banking $63 million in the last 12 months

Jay-Z has been crowned the richest person in hip-hop for the second year running.

According to a list compiled by Forbes.com, the rapper – real name Shawn Carter – banked around $63 million (£40 million) in the past 12 months from his music, business ventures and endorsements.

Next on the list was P Diddy on $30 million (£19 million), followed by Akon on $21 million (£13 million) and Lil Wayne, who earned $20 million (£12.5 million) despite being in jail since March.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z is set to get even richer with the publication of his memoirs in November.

The top 10 richest people in hip-hop over the last 12 months were as follows:

1. Jay Z – $63 million (£40 million)
2. P Diddy – $30 million (£19 million)
3. Akon – $21 million (£13 million)
4. Lil Wayne – $20 million (£12.5 million)
5. Dr Dre – $17 million (£10.5 million)
6. Ludacris – $16 million (£10 million)
7. Snoop Dogg – $15 million (£9.5 million)
8. Timbaland – $14 million (£9 million)
9. Pharrell Williams – $13 million (£8 million)
10. Kanye West – $12 million (£7 million)
