Free copies of Jay-Z's new album 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' will not be eligible for the UK chart.

One million copies of the album will be given away for free to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users 72 hours ahead of the record's official release on July 4. The company reportedly paid $5 (£3.18) for each copy of the album, instantly giving the LP platinum sales status. Users will receive the music through the Magna Carta app, which they will get later this month.

However, a spokesperson for the Official Charts Company tells NME that these copies will not be counted: "Music which consumers receive free of charge, either as physical releases or downloads, have never counted towards the Official Charts and this release will be no different. Legitimate purchases of Jay-Z's album will count, however, as usual."

Jay-Z announced details of his 12th LP during Game 5 of the NBA Finals earlier this week (June 16) – scroll down to watch the video. The three-minute promo for Samsung shows Jay-Z working in the studio with Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams and Timbaland and talking about making music in the modern world.

"We don't have any rules, everybody is trying to figure it out," he says in the clip, which you can watch below. "That's why the internet is like the Wild West. The Wild, Wild West. We need to write the new rules." He adds: "The album is about this duality of how do you navigate your way through this whole thing, through success and through failures, and remain yourself?"

Earlier this month, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Nas and Timbaland were photographed working together in the recording studio (see above). Roc Nation executive Lenny S posted the above image on his Instagram page with the following caption: "JAY x JT x NAS x TIMBO Rat Pack shit. For some this is "Work"... For us it's just Fun. #RocNation."
