Producer Jermaine Dupri has been appointed president of Island Records new department of urban music.

Dupri, who until recently headed up Virgin’s urban music department, will oversee Island’s activities in this area.

Having worked as a successful producer with the likes of Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys, Dupri left his post at Virgin in October when his girlfriend Janet Jackson’s [b']20 Y.O.'[/b] album sold disappointingly.

Dupri produced the 1992 hit 'Jump' by backwards-jeans wearing duo Kriss Kross when he was just 19 years old.
