Jay-Z has announced he will play two free shows in support of US Presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The shows will take place at Detroit's Cobo Arena (October 4) and Miami's Bayfront Park Amphitheatre (October 5).

Jay-Z is hoping that the gigs will encourage people to sign up to vote in November's US election.

The deadline for US citizens to register in many key states is next Monday (October 6).

News of the shows comes shortly after it was announced that Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are to play a Barack Obama benefit concert in New York on October 16.

Other bands supporting Obama include Vampire Weekend, Les Savy Fav and The Fiery Furnaces.
